The Board of the CPAA meets with students from the University of Alberta, University of Calgary and University of Lethbridge each year to network, highlight the opportunities and rewards of pursuing community planning work in rural and small urban municipalities in Alberta, and promote the CPAA scholarship opportunities and the CPAA conference.

CPAA supports annual scholarships that are awarded to planning students in Alberta and community projects.
This includes the University of Alberta, University of Calgary and University of Lethbridge.

How to Contribute
CPAA Student Scholarship
The deadline is March 26, 2025.
This year we are offering two scholarships with one worth $1000.00 (First place) and the other worth $500. (Second place)
- These scholarships will be available to undergraduate and graduate students from:
- the University of Alberta (School of Urban and Regional Planning)
- the University of Calgary (School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape & Bachelor of Design in City Innovation)
- the University of Lethbridge (Urban and Regional Studies) and
- any other (undergraduate or graduate) student registered in a planning related post-secondary program in Alberta.
To apply, you are being asked to develop a project that focuses on CPAA’s theme of this year’s conference: “Global to Local”. This theme reflects our commitment to exploring the impact of global trends on local communities and how municipalities can leverage these trends to foster growth, innovation, and community well-being.
Projects can take what-ever form you wish but must be focused on a planning theme or issue that relates to the theme of the conference. For example, it could be:
- a paper (2-3 pages)
- a poster
- any medium you are interested in using (i.e. if a video, it should be 1 ½ to 3 minutes in length).
For example, here are some ideas to help provide direction, although you may use ideas you have that is related to the conference theme:
- Fostering Collaboration between global and local stakeholders
- Balancing Growth: Strategies for sustainable development
- From Conflict to Cooperation: Strategies for resolving global-local tensions
- Reconciliation Through Collaboration: Indigenous engagement and partnerships
- Environmental Stewardship: Sustainability achievements through planning (e.g. Water Resource Management)
- Economic Development Opportunities: Maximizing opportunities through collaboration
- Transportation Networks: Connecting global to local.
If you are of the winning entries, you will be welcomed to the CPAA conference where we cover the conference fee and hotel room cost. Transportation and two meals are not provided, we hope that you are able to attend. You will be provided an opportunity to present your project at the conference and it is a great networking opportunity. Winners will be notified if they have won by March 28, 2025.
To be eligible, you must:
- be in an undergraduate and graduate planning related post-secondary program in Alberta
- be willing to become a student member of CPAA at annual student membership fee of $25.00

University Scholarships and Awards
University of Alberta
Arts or Science, School of Urban and Regional Planning
Awarded to a student with superior academic achievement enrolled in any year of an undergraduate degree in the School of Urban and Regional Planning. Selection is based on academic standing. By application to the UofA Office of the Registrar.
This scholarship will be available early in 2024 and the amount is $1000.00.
University of Lethbridge
Bachelor of Arts, Urban and Regional Studies Program
Awarded to the highest achieving student out of a pool of those with a minimum 3.0 GPA average entering their final year of studies. Full time undergraduate students enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts – Urban and Regional Studies program and must be entering their final year of studies.
The award is now available through the university and the amount is $1000.00.

Community Achievement Award submissions must be received by the CPAA Office via email to cpaa@cpaa.biz by 4:00 pm, March 26, 2025.
CPAA recognizes the outstanding work and successes of our members with our Community Achievement Award to be awarded annually.
Community Planning Association of Alberta members are focused on multiple ways of improving the quality of life in their local areas. Communities across Alberta have undertaken and are currently involved in a wide range of community-based projects to address community safety, health, local services and social and economic opportunities.
This award is intended to recognize, celebrate, and share the success and hard work of an individual, team, or organization whose creative ideas and work has positively contributed to community building and well being anywhere in Alberta.
The only requirement is that you have to be a member of CPAA. If you are not a member and wish to apply simply become a member by contacting CPAA as below.
The award winner will be formally announced and presented with a plaque recognizing their achievements at the 2025 CPAA Conference in Red Deer (April 28 – 30) and will be featured in CPAA publications. Nominators and winners must be CPAA members in good standing.
